Phil Ivey has been referred to as the number one poker contender on the globe by most of the top-ranked professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wished to learn anything he could about the game. He would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil did not allow the detrimental feedback from others destroy his ambition of being one of the best poker players in the world.
Phil started playing intently after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an undying love for the game of poker. Phil says that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers destroying cash games on a normal basis.
