Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lost most times. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. He was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
