Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of betting possibilities and because you have many players battling for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
