Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting choices and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha Hi-Lo.
