Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching turning one. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn everything he could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the adverse comments from other people annihilate his goal of being one of the greatest poker players on the planet.
Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed many of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to discipline and a continuing love for poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is quite humble about his achievements. He admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly aspires to improve.
Although Ivey has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying cash games on a normal basis.
