Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he played many hours and fail to win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate even more on the game.

The real advancement in his game began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
