Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
