Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only gambler to achieve final game in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the biggest pots in high stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a large pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the greatest enthusiasts in the world. While wagering on internet poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 No Limit max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and gambles very weak. He waits patiently for a good hand and then goes all in. I know Hansen is an amazing poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to sit at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Buying in for the minimum takes almost all of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is presumed to be 1 of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy-in for the full dollar value. I believe tv can skew our view of the real world at times. The best poker players anywhere in the world might just be guys you have won’t have heard of. Gus can be seen playing net poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in high stakes omaha/8 and texas hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he use his talents in money games?
