Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
